Why would I be getting these lines on the wall in my light render?

My teacher couldn't figure it out either.

Hello David, make sure you have some divisions on the geometry. If you are using a plane for that wall, the plane should have 15 (or more) divisions, or if it is a cube make sure you plenty of divisions, sometimes that can be an issue when Mental Ray makes shadow calculations etc. The more divisions, the smoother the gradation of shadows. Depth map shadows if used (should be increased by adding more samples, and FG shadows could be increased as well. Hope that helps.

David, these look to me like depth map shadow artifacts. Tough to say without looking at the scene... and now that I see it's a mental ray render, maybe not? Still, make sure 'use mid dist dmap' is checked if you have any dmap-shadow-casting lights. You could also try increasing the Shadow Bias and see if that fixes, or at least changes, it.
