trying to rig a face that is a single flat polygon

I am relatively new to maya and am working on my first character rig, but it's kind of an unusual one and I'm having a hard time finding information about what I need to do.

The character looks like an agate geode with a smiley face on the flat side of the cut rock.

I want to animate the face to that it looks like it is talking, but I'm not sure where to start. I have watched some tutorials about rigging a face with joints or blend shapes, but these tutorials employ characters with faces/heads modeled with many polygon faces.

Here is my model if that helps:

Thanks so much!

Hi Lindsay.

The short answer is that you could always just add divisions to the face, producing the extra edges and faces needed for rigging. However...

The longer answer is, 'this isn't a great first project if you want to learn about rigging characters.' As you point out, it's pretty unusual, and will likely require some unusual techniques. Why don't you start out with a more conventional character as a learning exercise, then take what you learn and apply it to this project?

Either way, good luck.
