Animated Cross-Section, Custom clipping plane or 3D masking object in Maya?
on May 20, 2013 at 7:58:40 pm

I am trying to re-create something I see in nearly every Autodesk or architecture showreel and after hours of research I cannot find out how to do it properly in maya.

I have a business park modeled in maya, and want to reveal the architecture appearing in a series of 'wipes' in 3d space past the camera.
This Autodesk showcase video shows exactly what I am aiming for with a car and building.

I have tried using booleans like in this tutorial (http://vimeo.com/42494761) but my geometry is too complex and crashes maya. I also cannot seem to get 'use background' shaders to work.

The nearest thing I can get is keyframing the near/far clip plane - but this is obviously locked to the cameras perspective.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hi, I realize this may be a year late (only just signed up) but you can use the mirror cut tool in Maya, delete the mirror geometry and use the mirror cut plane to animate over the geometry thus allowing you to animate a camera around the object without having to use a clipping plane.
