Wrapping nCloth ribbon effect
on Apr 1, 2013 at 6:24:34 am

I am relatively new to Maya and am wondering if someone can help me with the execution of an effect where an object would be defined by a cloth/ribbon wrapped around it, I have been using this illustration as a reference but I am unsure as to how to wrap something so precisely?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

I've never tried something like that, but after a bit of thinking, this is how I should do it:

1) Get or make a model of the horse head (or whatever you want to, really).
2) Make the mesh you made live.
3) Take the curve tool and create the path for the ribbons. The live mode of the mesh should ensure that you don't have to deal with aligning it with the mesh surface.
4) Take a thin cube (or maybe even just a plane), align it with the curve (put it at the start of the curve, not the end), select the correct face, shift + select the curve you made and do an extrude. Crank up the number of divisions to get a nice and smooth ribbon. Done!

You won't even need (n)dynamics, I reckon. If the result is too smooth for your liking, you could project a displacement map onto your ribbon to make it a bit more curvy without having to model it into it. It will become a fairly expensive render, but as long as it's a still it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

Closing, I like the idea. I might have a shot at it myself, just to see how far I get. Good luck.

Thanks, a great help, although I have found that when using the extrude tool the resultant "ribbon" intersects the mesh rather than aligning to it in the same way as the curve, is there a simple way to combat this that I have missed?

You could slightly upscale the curve, so it won't intersect. It might be a bit loose at this point, after which you could convert it into a dynamic object while making the mesh a collider and allowing the simulation to drop the ribbon onto the mesh. You should probably only allow the simulation to run for a few frames, because otherwise it'd just slide right off the mesh and onto the ground, seeing as the ribbon is probably not attached to the mesh.
