Complicated model: how to smooth ?

Hello all,

I was given a model of something that is going to be 3d printed and asked to make an animation with it. I am using a self made brush shader network which is looking great on a simple sphere test model. But as the complicated model has so so many angles and edges, the shader looks pretty terrible. I am looking for advice on how to smooth the model, without loosing the edge hardness or having to rebuild the model all together.

(I have tried various mesh>smooth combos but to no avail. the model has such intense geometry that little/no change has occurred)

I attached a quick render of the two models with the same shader attached to both.
