What is causing these White/Grey Artifacts (Mental Ray)
on Nov 5, 2012 at 7:48:10 pm

I'm Building a scene in Maya 2011 that has a mirror in it that, obvioiusly, needs to reflect.
I've set up the settings of my Materials as I would normally for a reflective surface, but when I
render I get this problem with white/grey Arifacts in my Reflections.

This problem occurs with Reflections as well as Refractions and it also occurs in things like
Glass bottles and my windows etc.

I'm using Mental Ray Mia Material x passes (and I'm rendering with Mental Ray)
But also when I use a blinn for my "mirror"-material the problem still exists.

It has no problem reflecting or refracting Blinn materials, but to change all my materials to Blinn instead of Mia Materials is very undesireable.
I'm using standard Maya lights (spot, point, directional, etc.) and I'm not using mr. Physical Sky or any of the likes.
I'm pretty sure my Max Ray Depths etc. are sufficient, but please don't hesitate to comment any thoughts you might have, as I might have overlooked some tiny setting.

This image shows how it should be (I copied the scene, and mirrored it to the other side, then deleted the actual mirror.)

And this one shows the problem I get when turning on my mirror

Compare the two, then it will be obvious what my problem is.

All help is appreciated ^^.

I know you've mentioned it, but this really does sound like a ray depth issue. Especially considering what you said about refraction and reflection on other objects.

Could you make some screenshots of your render settings? That might clear some things up.

Cheers,

Ben.

Here are the Render Settings I think you're after.
I've Marked the Various Max Ray Depth slots, as you see they should be sufficient enough.

(I know my Final Gather settings are low, that is to keep the render times low, now that I am still testing my textures.
(increasing these settings has no effect on the mirror's artifacts though)

Hm, you're right, those settings should be more than sufficient. I think we can cross that from the list.

Another possible cause: The cone-shaped artifacts at the base of the mirror could be an indication of a normal-issue. Are you sure they aren't flipped?

Yes, I'm sure that it is not a normal-based problem.

Someone else told me it might be caused by an issue Maya 2011 seems to have
regarding texture filters. So I checked it out and it solved my problem.

Aparenty, the filter (in the effects tab of my materials), when set to 1
blurrs any texture seen through an reflective, or transparent surface.
When I set this value to 0, my problem was solved.

Nontheless I want to thank you, Ben, for seriously looking into my problem.
I really appricate the effort.

Thanks,
Raymon
