Extruding a closed path/curve/spline to polygons

Hi guys!

This particular question has bothered me for almost two years...

Lets say I have a path from Photoshop, or Illustrator, and I import that path into maya: How can I extrude that (closed) path into a polygon object, without jagged edges, and ready to be smoothed without any hard edges?

Bonus question:

Lets say I use the Bevel Plus extrusion on a Photoshop curve, then the front of the object wont have any subdivisions... And since it doesn't have subdivision, I cant use the edge loop tool to strengthen the edges before using "3" / smooth...

How do I make a division within that face, so that I can use the edge loop tool? - or is there a smarter way to smooth an extruded polygon? :)
