problem with point light showing through object with maya render

Ok i have a space scene it includes a POLYGON earth object and i have a point light as the sun now the problem is ! when i move the earth in front of the sun the light still shows through the earth model :-( im stuck

It sounds like either A) there's an opacity set on your Earth Material, or B) the light isn't casting shadows. Without more information, that would be where I started looking first.

here is the test render maybe that will help and yes the light is casting shadows. as u can see in the picture the sun is behind the earth but its still showing through. by the way i had a hard time uploading the image so hopefully i done it right

Ok, I've got another guess. I'd have to see your actual Maya file to really see what's going on, BUT this is my guess:
I'm assuming that your Earth material is Tiff images, or perhaps, Iff, or PSD, or some other image format that stores alpha channel data. One thing that I've had happen in the past is when I loaded the file texture into an image slot in the hypershade editor, it would automatically put that same texture into the Transparency channel as well, BECAUSE it detected the alpha channel data. So, even though your transparency settings might be set to solid, there may be a file feeding unwanted transparency information into the geometry.
Here's the fix for this situation:
Open the Hypershade.
Double click on your Earth shader to load it into the Attribute Editor. Check your transparency channel. If it's not black, AND/OR there's a black play-button triangle where the Checker Boxes usually are, then you have transparent materials in your Earth Material.
Simple solution is to right-click the Transparency Channel and choose Break Connections.
OR
You can open your Hypershade, Graph the Material network and (assuming you have your channel connections separated, you can separate them in the hypershade menus. It will say Merge Connections) then you can manually delete connections from your main material to the transparency channel on your shader.

Hm. Yeah, I don't see anything there. Have you tried replacing the geometry. Swap out the one Sphere for a different one? You've got an issue somewhere. You might also test using a new light and a new camera as well. It's possible that one of them has picked up a bug of some sort. I've had scenes that otherwise seemed just fine, but had this strange problem that kept occurring no matter what correct settings I put into it. Only when I replace the camera did I find out that it was just the old camera that had a glitch in it somewhere.
That would probably be the next thing I tested. Try putting each material onto new spheres and put them behind the existing light and a couple of new lights, and then shoot them from the existing camera and create a new camera. You might find a bug in there somewhere.
