I really hope someone here can help. I feel a little at my wits' end here. I'm trying to do something that feels like it should be quite simple. I want to model a polygon rock (done); I want to Extrude the surface so that the rock appears to split, before lava floods out from inside and sets. I want to repeat this process - rock splits; lava flows; lava sets; rock splits, etc etc.

Basically , I want to animate this:

<- 1:16 - new rock is being formed by lava, pushing through the rock's surface and setting. Repeat. I don't need to model the fine, fine details just the general stuff.

I would like to achieve this by keyframing with Extrude, because I think it will give a lot of fine control over things. However, The Internet seems to conclude that there is no way to keyframe Extrude. Can anyone a) think of a better way to do this than I propose or b) suggest a way to do what I need? Please?
