how to convert max files to maya?

guys i was just wondering i have several models but they are in studio max format and i wanted to use them in MAYA 2012 how can i do this without spending money on converters?

If it's just a model, export them as fbx or obj. If it's an entire scene, render settings and everything, then I don't know if there is such a tool.

But exporting models as fbx or obj is very common and works great. Note: textures might not always survive the exports as well as you'd like. Keep this in mind.

I think FBX has been updated of late.
Not sure about OBJ.
Back in the day with was DXF :P

im using autodesks fbx converter and im able to import all 3ds files the question im left with now is how can i import including textures?

cool thanks i managed to import them in maya but i want the textures included

I don't know if that's possible. Obj does take some textures with it, but it isn't flawless. Beyond that, I don't think there's a tool that can do it properly.

If, however, you happen to run into one: please let me know because it'd be most useful.
