Maya turns off plugins
on Mar 9, 2012 at 12:51:43 pm

Hi there,

It's not much of a pressing matter, but I'm slightly annoyed by this: Maya occasionally/regularly turns off all/most plugins. Not just when it crashes, but also when I shut it down normally.

So I have 2 questions:

- Does everyone have this?
- What plugins are turned on by default?

Thanks!

Regards,

Ben van H.

This shouldn't be happening, no.

Doubtless you're aware of the 'Auto-load' checkbox next to the list of plugins in the Plugin Manager window... so it seems those are getting un-checked somehow when you turn off Maya? Strange.

There is a preferences file which is supposed to store this information. It will be called 'pluginPrefs.mel' and stored in your version of Maya's preferences directory by default (e.g. maya/2012-x64/prefs/).

The contents of the file will look something like this:

//Maya Preference 2012 (Release 1)
//
//
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin("", "OpenEXRLoader", "OpenEXRLoader")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin("", "realflow", "realflow")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin("", "mayaHIK", "mayaHIK")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin("", "ikSpringSolver", "ikSpringSolver")");
...

And so on, one line for each plugin. Take a look at that file, and see if there are any clues as to what's going on. Also make sure you have permission to overwrite that file, since that's what Maya should do whenever you save preferences or shut it down. (Check the timestamp on the file.)

Hope that points you in the right direction of finding a solution!

Yeah, I always check the auto-load box (when appropriate).

I checked pluginprefs.mel and it was.. short:

//Maya Preference 2012 (Release 1)
//
//
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"fbxmaya\", \"fbxmaya\")");

FBX maya is the only one I've turned back on so far, so that makes sense. But it's good to know that there is a file storing these preferences. A nice backup containing all regular plugins should do the trick when it happens again.

Would you know which plugins Maya has turned on by default? I only know a few; obj exporter, fbx, mayatomr.

Not sure, sorry. It shouldn't matter too much... you can leave them all off, and turn them on as you need them. The fewer there are the more RAM you save, obviously.

Maybe if you try deleting or renaming that file completely, Maya will recreate it with the default entries? Worth a try.

I pulled the defaults from my home-install of Maya which has been unused so far. For future generations, these are the default plugins:

//Maya Preference 2012 (Release 1)
//
//
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"OpenEXRLoader\", \"OpenEXRLoader\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"DirectConnect\", \"DirectConnect\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"mayaHIK\", \"mayaHIK\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"ikSpringSolver\", \"ikSpringSolver\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"decomposeMatrix\", \"decomposeMatrix\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"tiffFloatReader\", \"tiffFloatReader\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"objExport\", \"objExport\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"VectorRender\", \"VectorRender\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"mayaCharacterization\", \"mayaCharacterization\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"rotateHelper\", \"rotateHelper\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"MayaMuscle\", \"MayaMuscle\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"Substance\", \"Substance\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"OneClick\", \"OneClick\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"fbxmaya\", \"fbxmaya\")");
evalDeferred("autoLoadPlugin(\"\", \"ik2Bsolver\", \"ik2Bsolver\")");
