¨Animating objects effected by gravity.
on Mar 7, 2012 at 9:08:14 am

Okay, first of all let me explain what i want to end up with:
I have a logo made entirely from letters, so its pure text.
I want to make an animaiton where they fall from the sky, scatter, and then they allmost magneticly moves back into place.
Ive made the "dropping from the sky" animation by make riged bodys and applying gravity to them, then i took a plane a moved it slowly with a bit of rotation to make them scatter on impact.
Now my question is, now that they are phsyical objects, i cant animate translatiion on them?
so is there a way to work around it, or should i animate the sky drop anitation by hand?

Here is a screenshot of my scene if it is any help!

thank you for your time!

Hello Mathias, a simple way to do this would be to let the animation play out to the point where you would like to start having the letters come back together and set a key to turn off the gravity, then just hand animate the letters to come back together the way you would like. Hope that helps.

I know alot....but not as much as the other guy.

Another way to accomplish this would be with a cloth sim. You could turn the letters into rigid pieces of cloth, let gravity make them fall, then animate the 'input mesh attract' attribute to pull them back up to their original positions.

Yeah that sounds logical and i was thinking if there was a way to simply say:
At frame 1-250 these object is affected by gravity.
and the rest of the frames i want to move them freely.
can i simply turn off gravity when i wish to animate it?
If yes could you please show me a sceenshot of it, as im not sure if im doing this right.
Where do i turn it off again?
I can break connection.. but woulden't that erase my animation of the letters falling?
Sorry for being a bit slow.. bear with me :(

Keyframe the magnitude of the gravity field. Key it at 9.8 (or whatever value you're using) at frame 250, and then 0 at frame 251. No need to break connections. So long as there aren't any other objects being affected by that gravity field, this should work fine.
