Photorealistic macro photo of stationary design work

Hi guys,

I got a client wich is a design agency and wants to do some previews of their jobs like if they were printed and then photographed. Something like this:

http://0.s3.envato.com/files/1306167/_preview.jpg

But with multiple shots from the work and maybe a little bit more realistic, some of the pictures should look like macro photography.

I never done something like this and I was hoping someone could help me up.

How should I do the paper? Just a plane or a solid geometry?
What kind of lighting should I use? Maya lights? HDRI? Both?
How should I make the depth of field effect? In maya? or post?
What shader should I use?
Maya or Mental Ray?

If some of you could give me some answers to these questions or any other advices you remember I would be very thankful.

Thanks in advance!

Let's start by saying there is no secret recipe to a kickass render. However, there are some things that can make it look good.

To answer your questions:

1. I'd go for a really thin cube. REALLY thin. I think a plane will look fake-ish, but you could try.
2. HDRI's give you good results fast. I like them. If required, add additional lights.
3. DOF definitely in post. Use the luminance depth render layer preset in combination with AE's lens blur effect.
4. ..Whatever works? Not sure what you want to hear here?
5. I rarely use Maya Software. Mental Ray gives me way more options to tweak, so I'd say MR.

My idea is that you can go for any thing (solid or plane) to do the paper.
While coming to lightning I prefer Maya light.
Metal ray shader will be perfect for field effects.
