warping into a sphere?
on Jun 28, 2011 at 7:59:53 pm

Hey guys,

I'm trying to model a town, grass, trees, and then wrap all of these around a planet. (see example here:

So I created the environment with a city, gas station, cars, grass and roads on a plane surface... now i want to warp it all onto a sphere as shown in the above.

Any ideas?

Try using a combination of Geometry and Normal constraints (Animation -> Constrain). These will lock your models to the surface of the sphere you create.

I'm recommending this instead of a deformer solution (like using a couple of Bend deformers, or a Sculpt or something) because doing that will make the roof of your buildings much larger than their bases; the buildings won't bristle from the surface, but will bloat towards the top instead.

Hope that helps.

Actually, that would work great for the buildings but for the side-walks and streets etc, they need to sculpt around the sphere rather than stick to it.

Hmm. Here is a frame from what i'm working with: http://i.imgur.com/HlYoH.jpg

That's my slowly growing little town, I was hoping there would be a all in one solution. ie; modify - wrap town onto globe, haha
