Polygon to Sub-D error
on Feb 1, 2011 at 3:58:10 pm

Right, over the past time I've been working on a model of a rat. It is built with polygon geometry, with the intention of converting it to sub-d geometry later on. That 'later on' is now.

So, I select my polygon model, go to modify -> convert -> polygon to subdiv. Maya then presents the following error in the Script Editor:

select -r polySurface35 ;
deleteInternalValence2Verts |polySurface35|polySurfaceShape39;
polyToSubdiv -ap 0 -ch off -aut on -maxPolyCount 1000 -maxEdgesPerVert 32 |polySurface35|polySurfaceShape39;
// Warning: Nothing is selected. Select objects or components to delete. //
// Error: Command polyToSubdiv failed. Open Script Editor for details. //

It seems that people often get this error, but rarely/never without any clues to solve the issue. I _have_ selected a polygon model, in contrast to what the editor says.

Google couldn't help me out so I'm hoping someone here can :)

Expect eternal gratitude if you can crack this one!

Regards,

Ben van H.

Most of the time when you get an error converting to SubD there is something wrong with your geometry. Try going in to Polygons->Cleanup and mess around with some of the options. That might clean up extra faces or vertexes that are messing it up.

If you post this I might get a chance to look at it tomorrow.

Thanks for replying!

I've messed around with cleaning up my geometry and it hasn't fixed my problem. Still the very same error. Usually when the geometry is messed up, it says something like that in the script editor. My script editor only says I should select an object, which I clearly did :/

Regarding your last line: post what?

Ah, my bad: 1584_ratv31.mb.zip

Ignore the insane ugliness of the polygon model :)

Doh. You're on 2011 I bet. Can you post it as a .ma? I can just mod the version required to get it open.

Oh, yeah, I indeed use 2011. Here's the .ma version:

Ok, got it open. When converting to SubD I had an error - some edges are nonmanifold. I went to Mesh -> Cleanup, checked nonmanifold. That cleaned up so it would convert.

I still got an error about one of the vertices but it made the conversion.

BTW if you are rigging this guy, you might want to give him some more edges for a "shoulder" for his arms. And an extra edge loop or two for his neck. Looks pretty sweet overall.

Strange, I tried exactly that (cleaning up the non-manifold geometry) on my Maya 2011 version and it still gives the same error and won't convert. Looks like it's a 2011 issue. At least I know where the problem is now.

And yeah, it'll need some work before being ready to rig.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your time!

edit: And for the SubD!
