Hi, I need to create a stainless steel material - such as you would use for a knife or a fork.

I'm taking a Maya class, and we're using Software Render right now, so no mental ray yet. Is it possible to make something like stainless steel without mental ray? Please help. (Thanks in advance).

I read around more on this subject, specifically about the anisotropic material and it was suggested that to get the correct look, you either need a complex environment, or you fake it... so I'm thinking HDRI lighting.

However, in class we're not using mental ray yet, is there a way to do HDRI with software render? I do have a small library of HDRI images, any pointers on how to apply them to my scene? IE: Do you apply them to the lightsource or to the object? Anything helps!
