Maya 2011 beginner (Mesh>Smooth)

Hi
Im new to Maya, and have just started doing the 'getting started' exercises that come with the program. Im having a little difficulty understanding one section under the Polygonal Modeling section where you create a helmet. On page 81 of the Getting Started Maya 2011pdf, there is a section that asks

To smooth and subdivide the cube primitive
1 With the cube still selected in the scene view, select Mesh > Smooth >
, and set the following options in the window that appears:
■ Add divisions: Exponentially
■ Division levels: 2
2 Click the Smooth button
The cube primitive is smoothed and is rounded at its corners. The cube
has also been subdivided into smaller faces.

I have made the polygon primitive, but where is Mesh? and Smooth? I have looked in the help but I doesnt seem to work

thanks

first make sure that the drop box in the upper left of the interface (and just below the menus) is set to POLYGON. If it wasn't you should now see some new items in the menu above. Then you can go to MESH > SMOOTH.

No problem. After you use the program for a while you will see that having to switch back and forth like this is an inefficient way to work. If you use the 'heads up' menu that appears when you hold down the space-bar, directly to the right of the center of the menu is HOTBOX CONTROLS and in that menu is the option to SHOW ALL. Click that and you will be able to see all the menu items at once and not have to switch back and forth. It will seem like a lot of menu items to sort through at first, but they are grouped together logically in rows and you will get used to them before too long.
