maya pivot orient match object
on May 17, 2010 at 3:25:39 pm

i am aware of max's align pivot tool...(i mean if you can not do it in any other way you can at-least go to edit pivot and translate it manually to suit your need)
anyone knows the Maya equivalent...

to non max users:
my object is modified geometry but still is a basic sphere (basically character's eyes)i need the pivot to be oriented as the geometry's mesh so i can scale etc in a proportional way... right now its not so. (the attached image has the rotate tool set on local)

http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/930/axislocal.jpg
749_axislocal.jpg.zip
(i also find this problem when making curve controllers for rigs, once you freeze transformations... the pivot is set to world and does not follow the curves rotation axes... i hope i was able to explain myself.)

i will indeed appreciate any workaround/tip.

i am sure there is a way, i just do not know it,

thanks

MG

"i am sure there is a way, i just do not know it"

How do you know that there's a way? And how come you haven't used that knowledge to solve your problem?

Anyway, open the Scale Tool settings; it's all there.

michiel thanks for your reply, but I've been looking into it still didn't manage to find it yet.

the best i could do is set the move tool's axis(and scale tools in 2011) set as a face's normal's axis when in "custom axis orientation"
01 - i select the face in the move tool in normal average mode.
02 - i click the "custom axis orientation" radio button.
03 - set to face.
(As in the images)
01 - http://img404.imageshack.us/i/82535683.jpg/
02 - http://img24.imageshack.us/i/99929498.jpg/
03 - http://img192.imageshack.us/i/27713619.jpg/
and the axis is set to the normal of the object's face.

secondly i can not change any other object in the scene to its own custom axis. it seems it can only have one global custom axis. i mean if i change it in one eye-object.... it occurs in the other eye object as well.

apart from this as suggested by you i honestly couldn't find anything else in the scale tool, that could help me.

and most importantly i didn't find anything to solve the rotation axis match the object's normals.

here is how it works in max:
http://img52.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=044ew.jpg
once in the edit pivot mode and i can rotate/move the pivot or even align with the object itself with the align object tool (as in Maya 2011 in the move tool only) and all the translate options i,e. the move-rotate-scale is set according to the modified new pivot.

i would indeed appreciate any suggestions.

i found what i wanted - but only for the rotate ...

http://forums.cgsociety.org/archive/index.php/t-309308.html

excerpt:
[Go into component selection mode (i.e hit F8), press the ? icon on your selection menu bar and activate your rotate axes. Then spin them in your desired direction and exit component selection mode.

You can now rotate your object along another axis. However this attribute is not keyble, so changes inside an animation needs to be done through other means.

Cheers

still looking for orientation of scale and move tools!

found it for all rotate/scale/move!! :) same post ...

not a solution exactly but a workaround (not so bad!)

The Scale tool manipulator has no orientation options. Unfortunately this has not been yet implemented in spite of numerous user requests.
You can write a script for this or search for scripts that do that. In fact you can also do it without any script by following a few steps:
Create > Empty Group or if you want a new object.
Rotate the new group or object the way you want the scale manipulator for the original object to be oriented
Parent the original object to the new one
Freeze the transformations of the original object.
Ungroup and delete the new object if necessary.

finaly found almost solution (not in 2010, need it in 2010)... ...still the best one so far.

same as the third reply to the post (stated under the line)...and then set move tool to "along rotational axis" scale won't still work in 2010 however in 2011 set scale tool to same - "along rotational axis" works fine.

Manojit,

I'm still using Maya 2008, so this may not work for 2010, but I have been using Henry Korol's "Local Tools"
http://www.henrykorol.com/Scripts/LocalTools/LTDocIntroduction.htm
Which has worked well for me to re-orient my axes, in particular the scale axis.

I am also underthe impression that Maya 2011 has some of these features included, but I'm not positive. I think I saw something about it on an Autodesk blog:
http://area.autodesk.com/blogs/stevenr/maya_2011_highlight_modeling_and_gen...

Good luck,
Matt

I believe I found a solution to reorienting manipulator handles in Maya 2012 and it's simple...

1. Select your object so any of the types of manipulators are displayed.
2. GO to Window/ Settings and Preferences/ Tool Settings. (The below options will not be available without the manipulator tool being selected).
3. The first option in "Tool Settings" is "Move Axis". There you can orient the Manipulator Handles to the world, object, local, ect.
4. Select "World" to return the handles to a "straight" axis or select "Object" to align them to what ever orientation the object is currently at.
NOTE: This will change the orientation of all the objects in that scene.

To get your rotation value default (like Viewport axis) in any rotation position.........Do the following things:-
1----Select the object first
2----Press Q (to get out of rotation , translate or scale mode)
3----Press F8 (to get into the composition mode)
4----Go to the Status line, to turn on status line go to display-UI Elements-tick status line, Now Click on to the (?) option in status line like a question mark.......you'll get editable axis of your object appear in your viewport,
5----Again go to your status line, at the end of that line on the right side, you will get a box having arrow icon, just click on it & go to Absolute transform option, Click on to the axis appear in your viewport but be careful dont select any vertex edge or face, then press E to get rotation manipulator On, Look at the rotation values of any one axis in the channel box & put that value in the related Absolute tranformed option box, for eaxample if you have X value like -32.2 put the same value in the x option box, remember you just have to put anyone's axis value whether its X or Y or Z, that's it....you will get your object's rotation axis as per your viewport axis...........

Hope i 'll solve your problem.......
