Christmas lights

Hello all!
I'm making an animation in which the camera pans down an apartment with Christmas lights draped on the windows. I'm facing an interesting challenge on lighting each individual light bulb. If I make each bulb its own light, the rendering would kill my computer, so I'm trying to figure out a way to texture the little bulbs so they emit a kind of glow. Nothing inspiring so far. I suppose I could always try to do it in After Effects, but I'd rather keep everything in Maya...any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

Assign a simple lambert shader to the lights geometry, and set the Glow Intensity to a non-zero value. Glow Intensity is under Special Effects in the Attribute Editor.
