*.3ds imported to Maya 2009 sharp edges appear...can this be solved?
on Feb 15, 2010 at 7:10:07 pm

Hi,

I wanted to save some time on modeling a few objects, by downloading a couple ready made models. As I have mentioned in my post's subject, I am using Maya 2009, but while looking for the models I need, I have found only *.3ds type objects.

So I continued by downloading Maya Bonus Tools 2009 to get the *.3ds import plugin. I could't get it to work, so I copy/pasted the 3dsImport.mll from the Bonus Tools folder to maya's plugin directory. After I loaded the plugin inside Maya, I managed to import the 3ds files, but I ran into trouble with the models geometry. I get these ugly sharp edges on surfaces that used to bee smooth...:(

Can I fix this within maya, or do I have to export these files, in a different file format than *.3ds??

Thanks!!

You can fix it in Maya. [Polygons] Normals->Set Normal Angle...

Ok, I have tried to increase the default value (30.0000) progressively (45.000-180.000) and checked the results.

There are parts which looks better now, while others get worse. Is this the only trick I can do? :(

Thanks Michiel,
