Particles, Fur and PaintFx + depth

Hi all,
I've playing with a scene that has particles, fur and paintfx. I want to render out a depth pass or use DoF in-camera, but Maya's DoF is pretty poor and I don't want to start messing with Mental ray as my scene looks completely different when I try a MR render.
When I try a luminance depth/Zdepth pass either the fur, particles or paintfx don't appear properly. Can anyone make any suggestions about how to workaround this issue?
