Plug a transparency map into a displacement shader?

Hi,

I have created a neat topographical map using a DEM (Digital Elevation Model)
image, I now however have to cut holes into my topo to visualize mining pit outlines. , Can I plus an alpha map, into transparency for the displacement shader I created.

I'm trying to avoid , converting the displacement to poly's.

any ideas.
