Subsurface Shader Not Working on My Rigged Character

Hi everyone, I am working in Maya 8, and I have rigged a character from scratch. The weights are painted, blend shapes are there, the rig is now ready to go.

Now, when I try to apply a subsurface skin shader on the character (which I've done successfully countless times on other projects). Mental Ray won't render the scene. I tried to create a primitive object in the same scene as the rig and apply the shader to it, and the scene still will not render. When I remove the rig from the scene, mental ray renders skin shaders fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this? It's something about the rigged character that's messing things up. But I'm stumped as to how I can fix it.
