how to get rid of default lights?

My animation begins with the light intensity at zero. Then the lights fade in. My problem is, even with the light intensity turned all the way down, there appears to be some sort of ambient light turned on. Even though the shadows and highlights aren't there, you can still see shape and color. I even created my own ambient light and set it to 0 intensity. Any Suggestions? Thanks. See image below...

looks like your shaders have some ambient light into them, check the ambient
attribute of your shaders
