i am trying to animate a task such as painting a wall with a paint roller. i have the roller, and have it rolling on the wall, but i need to show the paint which would be left behind by the roller.
it seems like it would be somewhat simple, but i am new and having difficulties.
Traditionally this would be done with an animated texture. In essence you'd be creating a separate animation for the paint. Then use that animation as the texture for the wall and then animate the roller to match that. That's how you'd do it traditionally. There's probably a far more technical way to do it using the roller as a controller for a texture, but really that seems like taking the long way around.
To paint the texture on dynamically with the brush in Maya you'd have to capture the X,Y and Z coordinates for the brush and translate that to some sort of Stencil Texture connected to a ramp or something like that. Long story short... the easy way is to animate the paint separately.
