Animating a rigid body

I've done all the reading and research I can but remain stumped...

Goal: Create a simple bot character with collision dynamics that can be animated and react to it's movements.

Example: A sphere cut in half. The two halves open up like a clam shell. Imagine the sphere sitting on a floor. Quickly, the shells open up propelling it upwards as it bounces off the floor; like a frog jumping.

Problem: Once I create a rigid body, Maya does not recognize it changing shape as it opens up. When the shells open and it looks like a clam shell, it's still thinking it's a solid sphere.

So, it appears that a rigid body needs to be a 'dead' object because Maya doesn't see it changing. This perplexes me because shouldn't the geometry collide no matter what?

I appreciate any help.
