2D texture eyes on 3D mesh

Hey there I have a bit of a tricky one for ya:
I'm looking at creating 2d eyes for a 3d character in Maya9, that is a non-toon render.

The tricky part comes when I intend to animate things like blinking, moving the iris around (and masking it within the eye), and also a specular highlight that follows the light would be nice.

Ive thought about a pre animated .gif and keying between the frames but it will need a million frames for moving iris/blinking/specular..

So, can you do it?

Hey thanks for the reply and test file!
But its not quite what I'm after, I think it'll help if I show something similar:

Pocoyos face just has a projected '2d' texture for the facial details, however this exact method limits more detail, such as the mix of eye movement and blinking Im after.
I might just end up layering a bunch of masks or something..
