Is NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS (128MB)suitable for Maya 2008?
on May 16, 2009 at 10:53:34 pm

Hi everybody.

I have to buy a new laptop which is able to run Maya 2008.
The laptop I am interested comes with the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS(128MB). I know it is a weak card, but laptops with better cards are far more expensive...I have budget issues...

Thank you for your help

In theory it should work fine. Autodesk does not officially support gaming/non-quadro cards with maya, but most of the world uses them without a problem. I'd google and see if you can find any reports of it working otherwise. You may have display glitches here and there, but i doubt anything would be a show stopper.

yes it should work, I've done that ina a few machines, mostly in linux, if you got any glitches or problems with the display on windows, try the omega drivers, that always works for me on windows, http://www.omegadrivers.net

Thank you for your advice, I will check the Omega drivers out.

Does it make any difference if I install Vista or XP (both 32 bit)?
I have heard of some issues using Maya with Vista 64

Thank you for your reply.

I did a bit of searching and people complain about the ncloth feature and real time rendering both with glitches...I am not going to do any advanced stuff though, I need it for learning purposes that means 3D character modelling and lighting and texturing. By the time I will need to use particles or other advanced features hopefully I will have a powerful desktop to deal with it.
