Get velocity of an object
on Apr 20, 2009 at 11:10:16 pm

I am trying to animate rotating wheels on a car to the car's movement. I could use an expression, linking the rotation to the z translation, but if the car turns around 180degrees then carries on driving (forward, but back to the start point) then the wheel will rotate backwards. I figured that this must be a pretty standard requirement for a 3D wheeled vehicle/robot/whatever, so I'm hoping that someone has come up with an easy expression or bit of MEL to do this.

If there's a variable containing the velocity of the car, then I could just use that, but the only reference to velocity I can find (in the help pages) is when using rigid bodies or particles. Do I need to store the position at the previous frame and do some vector maths comparing it to the current frame? I hope not...

Thanks in advance for any ideas!
