importing AI vector artwork?

importing AI vector artwork?

I have an Illustrator file of a large city landscape with a bunch of ojbects that i want to set up in a Maya scene. Everything is going to be flat 2d style. The problem is that all the vector objects import as paths, and i lose all the fills. I can rebuild the objects by creating Planar objects from the AI paths, but this is tedious as i have to create new materials for all the colors and group everything, and it all becuase complicated and messy. My other option is to create raster objects and import them as teuxtures. Is there no support for importing filled vector objects? Or if not, what is the best approach?

maya always imports AI files as curves, what you could do is a script to select a bunch of files and apply planar to each one, or you can do it by hand.

I would go for the script
