Animate object transparency (not fade in) more stylized, how to?

Ok, so here is my question. I know i can of course just animate the fade in of an objects transparency tab. But what im trying to achieve is like a sweep almost, the object looks like it sweeps in. Imagine a vine that animates on by growing upwards and as it grows upwards it also becomes opaque. How would i go about doing this?

Hi
use a ramp to control the opacity of your shader and animate the colors of the ramp, that will help you

Appreciate using Ramp textures.

But the transparency happens in the texture space, with the ramp occupying the whole texture of the object. I would like to retain the old texture for the parts that are still opaque. How to do it?

For example, I have this fish model with some texture (that has some complex UV mapped). Now, how do I apply my ramp transparency texture only to a portion of the object and let the remaining portion of the object use the old original texture?

Note that I would like to have the transparency creep in from bottom to top (or from left to right) instead of in UV space.

Help is appreciated.

Thank you,
