So I am making a car drive down the road. I want to make the shadow pass on the road separate from the car. Usually I just make a layer with the duplicated geometry (of the object casting shadows), and turn off vis/rec shadows off in the attribute spread sheet. This has worked fine so far for lone shadows, but for some reason, It won't let me detach the duplicate specialed car from the real one. I can add it to a new display layer, but I need to turn the original layer off. When I do, the shadow-casting layer disappears. So, am I making any sense? I have tried un-parenting, and the duplicated car isn't the child of anything in the hypergraph. Does anyone know why this is happening? I am using maya 2009.
