Fluids Fire

I was wondering if someone could help me out?
We're doing a shot that involves an asteroid beginning a burn upon atmospheric entry, and I thought using fluids would be a great way to get some very realistic fire effects. I have it working about 70%- emitting from the object, proper colour and intensity, etc, but
I am having a problem with a couple things and I have been trying everything:

1- I can't seem to get rid of some of the blobbiness, and
2- I am using both velocity in the emitter, and an air field to affect the direction and create a fast moving, intense fire trail, however trying to get the proper settings is becoming increasingly painful with very little result

Is there anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks very much for the help!!
