Render layers losing MR shaders?

Hi all,
I had a search for render layers on here and read all the posts (most by me) :)

but couldn't see another one that answers this.

my render layers don't render default mi shaders?

first let me say me and render layers are old mates and I have lights selected on all layers.

my "masterlayer" renders as it should

"layer1" has one piece or geometry isolated (with lights)but this layer does not render the mi shader.

I'm using MR final gather and the default "Mi car paint phen" shader.

any ideas

Some things to check (I know you're old mates, but can't be too careful with the basics):

Is the shader assigned to that object the same one as on the master layer, or is it an override? Overriding shaders on a per-face basis can cause them to become disconnected.

Is the MR renderer selected/overridden for Layer 1? I assume Maya's default renderer wouldn't know what to do with the car paint shader.

Try creating a new object with the same shader assigned to it... maybe even in a new scene. That might help narrow down the problem.

Thanks for your reply,

it's normally the basics that catch me out but this time I have checked that the shaders are attached to the layer and there are no over rides and the layer is being dealt with by mental ray renderer.

I haven't yet tried a new scene so will do that next, could be a corrupt scene file I suppose.

Hi,

I just had a moment to try a fresh scene.

made a new scene put a cube in created mr carpaint phen "default".
went to render layers..... made layer included light and geometry(checked for overides)

did final gather render..................and it was Black!

the geo is there you can see it on the alpha channel?

bug perhaps?

can you try and reproduce it I'm using 2008

Hmmm, when I tried the same steps it rendered out fine.

Not sure what to suggest...

Oh dear, Ok thanks for trying. I will try it on a different machine,
and if that works I guess I will try a fresh install on mine(snore)
