OBJ imports.
on Jul 1, 2008 at 3:57:59 pm

Hi.
I can't import the textures of OBJ models into Maya.

What is the "mtl" file for and how does it work?

I got it right with 3ds files (which is very strange to me) but no luck with OBJ.

Thanks.

hi

you'll have to re-assign the textures inside maya, maya will create the correct shaders and file nodes, just open each node and find the file texture.

Hi.
The confusing thing is that it doesn't tell you what's missing. So it's hours of hit and miss, in the dark, with no flash light, surrounded by zombies who want to eat your face... or waste your time. Did I mention that it's in the dark?

Thanks anyway!

The Answer is 42.

well

you can open the .mtl file in any text editor and read there what map corresponds to each material

example .mtl

newmtl lambert10SG << material name
illum 4
Kd 0.00 0.00 0.00
Ka 1.00 1.00 1.00
Tf 1.00 1.00 1.00
map_Kd trackingCard.jpg << texture used

hope that helps

Thanks! That's great.

Is there no way of importing that info?

PS: How do YOU go about importing into Maya?

I was very surprised at how good 3DSMax files imported.
Max liking Maya is very new to me.

I don't really know of any way to import that data into maya, sorry.

you could try using FBX and might give you a nice result, importing between any apps is always a headache, every one works different, I've gotten nice results with FBX.

good luck

Its not possible to import textures from OBJ file into Maya, because OBJ plugin in Maya not working correctly.

If you can, please report it as bug from Maya menu: Help > Report a Problem

I think I have a workaround for this. I have found that when I import .OBJ files, I lose all texture data; but if I directly OPEN the file (File -> Open instead of File -> Import) I get the texture data. So, I open the obj/mtl, copy it all, then paste it in the file I actually wanted it to import to. Also, I have to do set all normals to face to get them right, but that might be a quirk of my .obj files.
