simple animation depressing geometry

I am looking to have a simple funnel shape with a ball circling around and then going down. I would just create the geometry and and a motionpath for the ball, however I want to have the funnel surface be depressed as the ball passes that part. Any advice or tutorials I could be pointed to?

Maybe just create a sculpt deformer for the funnel object and parent it under the ball?

I'm giving sculpt deformer a try, it seems so far a little to sketchy and not smooth enough. I think I've done something similar before with soft bodies and wonder if that may be a better alternative. Its been a while since I've used maya.....

The smoothness of the sculpt deformer's effect will depend on the amount of detail in your funnel surface. If you want a smoother effect, increase the resolution (number of isoparms for NURBS, amount of smoothing for polys) of the funnel surface and you should see an improvement.
