Creating Light Rays + "Gobos" in Maya, how?

Dear Creative Cow community,

Being a downright beginner in Maya, I've just started loving this beautiful tool - Since I already gained some 3D-experience using 3DsMax, I decided to start off with quite a huge project in Maya - Creating a 'virtual copy' of the stage seen in the broadway musical 'Wicked'- including all props.

If you like, you can have a look at the progress here:
http://www.maxisoft-online.de/stage.jpeg (about 4 hrs. of work until now - Texturing + modeling far from final)

Now I would love to create a lighting similar to the one used on the actual 'real' stage - You can see an example of what I'm trying to recreate here: http://img.stern.de/_content/60/27/602704/wicked1_600.jpg

As you can see, the 'lightrays', or 'beams', or however you want to call it, are clearly visible because of the fog they use. Additionally so-called 'gobos' can be seen projected onto the floor. (You can see another good gobo-example here: http://www.activemusician.com/images/store/support/EM_ADJ-GOBO-FLEX_FX3.jpg
the light clearly projects a visible shape onto the floor)

Now, what I found out until now, is, that you can create fog around lights in Maya. This looks great for 'standard', static lights, but I can't manage to recreate neither the 'light ray' effect nor the gobo projection (that should always stay attached to the ray of light) I'm trying to.

So I hoped somebody here might have a good idea on how I can realize my lighting needs in maya - I'd be happy for every suggestion.

regards,
- M.S.

Hi Max

This is very very easy actually.

create a spot light, under light effects click the map button for LIGHT FOG

then go back to the light and map a texture to the light COLOR

that will work great

Hello!

Of course I will - Though I'm afraid I've just came across another problem - When I today first tried not only to map the light's color channel with my custom shape, but also switch the light fog on (never tried this until today, because I thought it would just work) I only managed to get the customly shaped light:
http://img521.imageshack.us/my.php?image=prblmik4.jpg
But no fog at all :/.

My brains tell me I would probably have to Raytrace the light in some way in order to achive a customly-shaped light fog, but I (and google:-) ) struggle to find out how.

I would be glad if somebody could help,

Regards,
- M.S.

Hello!

Thanks for the picture, it helped me to finally understand the setup!

But - Somehow I still can't get it to work - I think I set up everything according to your picture though I simply must have done something wrong:
(The "Fog" - Tab, I didn't map anything to the color-slot, just left it as it is)
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/7816/prob1jv3.jpg
(When I try mapping my image into the "colour" channel simply nothing happens, but I think I'm supposed to just leave it blank there)

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/4511/prob2bj3.jpg
(Pic of my Light's settings, when I untick the three boxes that you have unticked nothing at all is rendered, also notice that my "intensity sample" is not displayed at all, just black)

I've tried doing it with .tga files, .bmp files and .jpg files, thought it might be a filetype-problem but still - It won't work.

Regards,
- M.S.

HI

Try rendering with out the texture, you should get a fog cone, everything seems to be okey.

Hi again!

Oh my gosh, my stupidity is unbelievable -.-.

All the maps I used for my lights were cone-shaped, the edges were black, but Maya of course uses the edge data to create the lightrays!

Problem solved -
Thanks a bunch!

(That's how my non-working images looked :
http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/3245/noworkgoboea0.jpg
as you can see, the area around the edges is black - as this data is used by Maya to create the effect, I didn't manage to get it working)

Greez,
- M. S.

Hi , I am trying to achieve a similar effect.

Light beams coming through prison bars. To clarify , do I use a texture on light color? Could you post your pic again it ain't up anymore.

I realize this is old, but may be helpful if people find this link doing a search....?

If you are doing something like prison bars....you can make a simple black & white gobo in Photoshop.
Easy to do windows, tree branches etc.

And file in the PSD file into either, color or intensity.

If you plug into intensity you can control the color and the still have some control over the intensity using Alpha gain (in the Color Balance menu) on the texture node.

Which may be handy if you want to project a cooler or warmer light into your gobo.
