I've got a project at the moment where I need to produce a landscape containing fields of tall grass in the foreground. I wondered if anyone had any tips for generating this kind of effect without pushing the polygon count towards the insane?!
I've tried using the paint effect tools but always reach a point where I need to convert the whole lot to pologons because of lighting issues.

could you get away with rendering a still shot of some high poly grass and then composting multiple layers of this one still shot instead of generating a ton of grass? Or maybe even put the render on a plane with alpha and render it in the scene. So now instead of many blades of grass you have a few planes with many blades of grass.
