Spikey Ball

This seems simple enough but I just can't figure it out...
Is there a somewhat quick way to model a spikey ball?
A ball with many cylindrical 'spikes' coming from the surface. Non animated.
Kinda like a Skwoosh ball.

Thanks for any advice!

How many spikes do you need?

For a few, you might start with a soccer-ball-style primitive, then extrude certain faces. Turn off 'keep faces together' in your poly tools.

If you need many, many cylinders, the simplest approach would probably be to just pile a bunch of cylinders inside the ball, rotated at different angles, and then Boolean the whole mess together.

One final option might be to use the Artisan interface to paint geometry on the sphere--you could set it to paint long cylinders, aligned perpendicularly to the surface.

Oh, and a final method would be to use Paint Effects--depending on how much detail you need, this might be the most efficient solution.

Good luck!

Thanks Steve!
The Cylinder grouping is working out well.
