The old "mental ray out of memory" thing
on Jul 6, 2007 at 1:17:16 pm

I've read tons of posts on this. None of them seem to work. Two things, might be related, with regard to Maya 8.5 and MR.

1) Batch render says "Completed", but only gives me a 1K file that won't even open. TIFF.

2) "Mental Ray out of memory" on a single frame render. It's a big scene, for certain, but I rendered it out without any problems on Maya 7. Same RAM (2GB) same CPU (2Ghz)

Things I've tried:

Rendered from command line.
Large BSP (really large).
Typed in my own memory limit.

I read somewhere that I should use RGB bump and displacement maps (as opposed to greyscale). Any substance to this? Seems like I'd be grasping at straws.

Any other tricks? (other than buying more RAM when I know very well that it won't fix a thing.)

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the same problem. I have a batch render though, since you only have one frame, try the method used in the reply to this post.
