I'm relatively new to Maya, and am looking to build a flowing ribbon that I can animate flowing down a street. If anyone can explain how to do this or point me in the direction of a tutorial, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, please remember that I am new at this, so the most basic explanations would be great. Thanks!
I would choose different aproaches depending on how the final shot should look.
If you go for total control of the ribon shape and movements, I would choose to work with a ribbon with a smooth bound skin.
If you go for a caotic ribbon, a ribbon following other objets orpushed by a dynamic field, I would go for either softbody or softbody curves.
I know this might makes no sence to you whatever but thats what I would do.
Here are some tutorial on the subject, some of them are advanced and you should just see them and not worry if you don't understand them. It'll help you anyway knowing what can be done, even though you can do it yet. One day you will.
All the tutorial have a bit of all you need to acomplish you ribbon-mission.
