render on Fields versus on Frames for Video editing using AVID
on Mar 15, 2007 at 12:58:26 pm

Hello,

I've always rendered frames in Maya with motion blur. I am working with a new person at the moment using AVID that asks me to render on fields to avoid flickers and strobes.

I give him the frames through After Effects using the LOWER FIELD set.

Does it make sense to render on fields for video editing?

Thanks a lot,
Hopkins

Hopkins-
it's an aesthetic thing really. If you want the smoothest, flicker free movement possible, then yes you need fields. However, this tends to give animation a "video look". Sometimes this is fine (like in some motion graphics) other times you want to make it more surreal (like 3d animation with characters), so the strobe/jerkyness is fine. Easiest way to get fields out of maya (and the best quality) is to render/animate at 60fps, then compress it in post to 29.97. (or if you are doing pal, redner at 50fps, then take it down to 25fps).
hope this helps
Chad
