Dynamics of Instance Geometry in a particle system...
on Feb 14, 2007 at 10:45:25 am

I'm trying to animate coins falling down onto a hard surface.

I'm using a particle system referencing the geometry of a modelled coin.
These particles are affected by a gravity field that makes them collide with a plane. (passive rigid body)

My problem is that these dynamic collisions & reactions are not taking the shape of the instanced geometry into account. (They all bounce & retain the same orientation.)

Please advise on how I can get these particles to react dynamically according to the referenced geometry's shape....

This cannot be done with particles. The purpose of instancing geometry to particles is to simplify the calculations needed, treating each object as a simple point object for the purposes of forces and collisions. You will need to duplicate the coins and make each duplicate a rigid body.

OK. I was hoping it wouldn't come to the solution you suggested...
But at least I now have closure on what the technique can & can't do.

Thanks for the help Steve.
