Animated particle/fluids head

Anybody got an ideas on how I could create the effect of an animated particle/fluids head like the one in the below images.

I've got very little knowledge of maya at the moment so i'm just looking for a point in the right direction with regards to what to research.

Is it just the case of modeling a 3D head and using it as a container for the fluids or particles??

Any help offered is greatly appreciated.

Cheers :)

One approach would be to sculpt the face, make it emit particles (a surface-type emitter) and then hide the geometry itself. All that was left visible would be the particles. You could still animate the face using any method, and the changes would be reflected in the position of newly-emitted particles.

I don't have much experience with fluids, but my sense is they wouldn't really be suited for this.
