Hi cow polk,

I need to press a letter into a subdiv chocolate and can't seem to get a high quality result.

I tried converting to poly's and then doing a bolean intersect which did the job.
However when I went back to sub div it looks rubish?

are there any other methods.

cheers

Jim

What do you mean "it looks rubbish"?

Did you try creasing the edges of the holes after converting back to SubD?

heres the looking rubish example and here's the reason why I can't select the edge.(too many edges)

I am hoping it's something easy or a different approach thats needed.

cheers for your help past and future.

I have decided to bump map to get the job moving.

but I would still be into hearing solutions for this problem, I'm sure there will be times when a bump just wont do.

thanks again

howdy cow polk,

forget that bump map nonsense!

incase any one finds them self in the same situation I was in I will tell you my solution.

use a displacement map with a multiply divide node to press in my monogram then convert displacement to poly.

the result is a bit heavy on the poly count but the result is broadcast smooth and render times are bearable.

cheers

...I was just going to suggest displacement instead of bump. :)

I agree that the SubD version didn't really look very promising--the geometry wasn't flowing well at all. Not sure if there might have been a fix for that--I'm not really a modelling guy.

Sorry I took too long getting back. Hope the project works out.

yeah booleans may be quick but they sure are dirty.

cheers
