I followed a tutorial on Highend3D that created a metal gear using the dgs_(i forgot what goes here) mental ray texture. I applied the texture to my own object though, not to the gear in the tutorial. I lit the object based on an HDR image I obtained from the tutorial-maker. I am happy with how my bullet looks (even though the shape isn't realistic), but I want there to an alpha channel around the bullet, not just the HDR that image that I used for lighting.
