using waveheight offset to make big wave

I was told you can map a ramp(all white) via a spherical projection into the wave height offset of the ocean shader and use this to create a large hump/wave.

When I try I have to go through the connection editor, and i chose out colour to wave height offset(this turns to lower case italics but not greyed out). I am not expecting to see anything till i render, but even then I am not getting any difference.

Has anyone had any luck with this method - or am i making an obvious error somewhere?
