3ds max vs. Maya

Cross-posted at 3dsmax

Hello all,
I am about to join my school's robotics team, where we are going to learn a 3D package and make some animations, visualisations, etc. What would be the difference in using 3ds max vs. Maya? What are each one specifically for, now that they are owned by the same company?

Thanks so much,
Alexander Gao

Maya is more known for 3D entertainment and 3D Studio is widely used in the gaming world. Beyond that there's not a lot one can do that the other can't. It's mostly a workflow issue and which demo you like the best. Download both and play. Maya's MEL is wicked powerful and along with paint and some other features aren't found in many / any other packages, at least to the extent in which they're implemented in Maya. It's a monster though, be brave. :-)

ive skipped around a bit between 3d software packs, and truthfully even though most people say maya is the hardest to learn, in my opinion it makes the most sense. the intial learning curve is steep. but once you get the basic workflow down, there's nothing you cant do with little effort.
