Possible to render just a mask pass?

Alright all you rendering and compositing gurus, tell it to me straight--are Maya's 'render RGB channels' controls mere placebos?

You can check and uncheck depth, alpha, AND colour channels in the render globals. This suggest that--in theory--it is possible to render out a single-channel image containing only mask info (or depth info). But I have never--and I mean NEVER--been able to get this to happen. It seems to me that the colour channels are ALWAYS rendered out. Sure, it's easy enough to get them to render out solid black--but is it possible to not include them at ALL? Why quadruple the file size when all I want is a mask pass? (Okay, it's not quadrupled when I use a compressible file format like TIFF... but you get the point.)

And if not... why give us those darned checkboxes?!

I should mention that I've tried fiddling not just with Render Globals, but also with camera attributes, render layers (though I don't have a lot of experience with those), and even flags for the command line render. "render -rgb off -alpha on" produces the same output as "render -rgb on -alpha on".

Any insight appreciated!

Never mind,

That only works for %100 percent opaque geometry :(

Yeah, dumb I agree!
