Creating Razor wire

I am working on a project that require me to animate razor wire. I have created the profile of the wire, then extruded it along a path. I then created the barbs, and was hoping to distribute them along the same path, but I am having problems finding how to do this. Any suggestions would greatly be appriciated. Thanks!

There are many possible solutions, depending on the requirements of the project.

First, might you be able to get away with using Paint Effects? It might be a solution for large amounts of wire that's not going to be seen up close.

Second, what about simply using a long, thin NURBS ribbon, and using a repeating transparency texture to trim it down into the barbed shape?

A more complicated (too complicated?) solution might involve turning the curve into a softbody (which creates a particle at each vertex) and then instancing a barb object to the particles. This will give you authentic geometric barbs without increasing the geometry load of your scene too much.
